ICT Trends
Informing CANTO’s 2011 Agenda
Increasing connection speeds, increasing demand
for content, explosion of social media, cloud
computing, and the increasing popularity of tablet
devices, are some of the noted industry trends.
These trends hold exciting possibilities for the Caribbean
region.
For instance, cloud computing allows access to
software and data, plus provides virtual data storage
facilities, allowing shared usage by multiple
users. This opens up opportunities for small and
medium size enterprises (SMEs) to access cloud
resources at more affordable costs when compared
to expending large up-front costs to access
such services on an individual basis. This allows
for fundamental changes in their business model,
as SMEs are able to adopt a service on demand,
or pay as you go approach for these critical ICT inputs.
Given the contribution SMEs make to economies,
cloud computing offers enormous possibilities
for the development of such businesses.
Globalization’s Impact on Cyber
Security in the Caribbean
By: Alana Wheeler
National Security analysts recognize that the
definition of security has changed because the
fight for it no longer occurs on physical battlefields
but in unconventional places and against non-traditional
security adversaries. Although a
significant segment of the developing world still
remains untouched directly by globalization and
remains largely excluded from its benefits, the
increasing dependence on technology and the
Internet warrants an in depth study of the cyber
threats that affect developing nations like those in
the Caribbean
Globalization has modified and re-oriented the
notion of national sovereignty where the state is
now less in control of its own security. National
security has now become borderless as it expands
beyond physical borders to embrace non-physical
security such as Cyber security and human
security. This globalized and borderless world has
increased the threats to Caribbean economies
- mainly drug cartels, which have become more
innovative in evading detection by maximizing their
use of cyberspace and technology.
Ensuring Readiness For ENUM
Deployment In The Caribbean
Submitted by: TATT
Revolution in the global telecommunications industry
continues with the planned deployment of ENUM in
countries worldwide. Some countries in Europe such
as Austria, are already involved in ENUM deployment.
In our own region, the United States of America has
already undertaken trials in ENUM deployment. It is
therefore imperative that the Caribbean keep abreast
of the deployment of this new technology as operators
and regulators are positioning themselves for a
future that may soon include widespread demand
and use of this technology.
ENUM (tElephone NUmber Mapping) can be best
described as a technology that helps integrate telephone
communications network to the Internet.
This technology enables users and operators to interconnect
different electronic communications services
and software applications, such as mobile and
fixed line telephones, voice over IP and email using
a single identifier. This single identifier is a telephone
number which is converted into an Internet domain
name so communications can be routed transparently
over the Internet
